Frankincense: an ancient resin that benefits the skin
Olibanum (or frankincense) is an aromatic resin extracted from the bark of trees of the genus Boswellia . There are two main types: Boswellia sacra (Oman, Yemen), Boswellia carterii (Somalia, Ethiopia), and Boswellia serrata (India). All produce a resin rich in active compounds.
In cosmetics, the key molecules are boswellic acids (powerful anti-inflammatories), incensole (anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic) and terpenes (antioxidants). These compounds work synergistically to protect, repair and regenerate the skin.
Frankincense can be used on the skin in three forms: essential oil (distillation), hydrosol (floral water), and powdered resin or infusion (traditional use).

The 7 benefits of frankincense for the face
1. Anti-aging: smooths wrinkles and firms the skin
Boswellic acids stimulate collagen and elastin. A split-face clinical trial (Calzavara-Pinton et al., 2010) showed that after 4 weeks of using a cream containing 0.5% boswellic acids, there was a reduction in photoaging and fine lines and an increase in elasticity as measured by ultrasound.
2. Radiant complexion
By smoothing the skin's texture and improving its suppleness, frankincense gives it a fresher, plumper appearance. The resin infusion (frankincense water) is particularly appreciated for its immediate toning effect.
3. Anti-stains
Recent studies (Yan et al., 2024) show that volatile frankincense oil, rich in incense, inhibits melanogenesis (melanin production), suggesting potential for reducing brown spots.
4. Anti-inflammatory
Boswellic acids inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, particularly inflammatory leukotrienes. Frankincense hydrosol is particularly suitable for soothing sensitive or reactive skin.
5. Anti-acne: purifies and regulates sebum
Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that reduce pore inflammation. The 2010 trial measured a significant decrease in sebum secretion, refining pores and essentially reducing shine.
6. Healing
Frankincense promotes cell renewal and can reduce minor scars, acne marks, and small lesions. This property has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Arabic medicine.
7. Antioxidant protection
Antioxidants combat free radicals (pollution, UV rays, oxidative stress), offering protection against premature aging.
