Perfect for purifying your space and creating a moment of calm
Oman frankincense is a resin harvested from Boswellia sacra, the incense tree that grows in the arid mountains of Dhofar, in the southern part of the sultanate. It is there, in this specific region, that frankincense has been harvested for over five thousand years. The Egyptians offered it to the gods. Caravans in ancient times crossed the peninsula to sell it for a fortune. Even today, in every Omani home, olibanum is burned in the morning and evening, just as one opens and closes a door.
It is a living material, rooted in one of humanity's oldest traditions.
The resin offered by Real and Roots comes exclusively from Oman. Never from Morocco, never a substitute. It stands out for the purity of its smoke, the depth of its aroma—which is woody, slightly lemony, and enveloping—and for its even burn, leaving no black residue or acrid odor. Each batch is selected for its quality, with no processing or additives.
Why use frankincense?
Frankincense is not an air freshener. It doesn’t mask anything. It transforms the quality of the air—and, with it, the quality of the moment. The rising smoke creates a gentle pause in the day. It marks a threshold between what has just happened and what is yet to come.
It is used to purify the air in a room after a busy day. To prepare a space for a moment of calm, reading, prayer, or focused work. To accompany a daily ritual, however brief it may be. To create a transition between the outside and the inside, between hustle and bustle and rest.
In some Omani traditions, frankincense is also burned to welcome a guest, after a birth, or simply because the occasion calls for it. It is a gesture of care for the home.
How to use it
Place a charcoal briquette on a brass or ceramic incense burner. Let it heat up for one to two minutes, until it is evenly glowing. Then place a few grains of frankincense on a small dish away from the heat source. The smoke rises slowly, white and light, and begins to fill the room.
Let the scent circulate freely for a few minutes, with the window slightly open if you like. Some people move the incense burner from room to room. Others set it down and sit quietly, simply being present with what is happening.
Three to five grains are sufficient for daily use. The resin burns slowly and can be reapplied to the same charcoal. There is no set duration. The ritual takes whatever form you give it.
Quality and Origin
Oman is the historic birthplace of frankincense. The Dhofar region, blessed by the khareef monsoon, offers the exact conditions that Boswellia sacra needs to produce an exceptional resin. Harvesting is still done by hand, by making incisions in the bark, using a method passed down from generation to generation. The sap flows out, dries in the sun, and forms those translucent, white-to-pale-yellow tears that are instantly recognizable.
Real and Roots selects its batches based on three criteria: the visual purity of the resin, the richness of its aroma when burned, and the complete absence of additives or blends. What you receive is the resin exactly as it was harvested, with no intermediate steps.
A simple gesture. A few grains of resin on a piece of charcoal. The smoke rises, and the space takes on a different quality because, for the duration of that smoke, we have stopped doing things and simply stopped to be there. That is all frankincense asks for: a moment. In return, it offers a place where we can return to ourselves.
